Consistency Is Key To Success

If you consistently workout, you’re likely going to look fit. If you consistently study, you’re likely going to do well in school. In almost anything, whether it’s coding, being a professional poker player, or learning how to ride a bike, consistency is the key to success.

As Dwayne Johnson once said, “Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come.” And as Tony Robbins says, “It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.

Consistency meaning

Consistency – the achievement of a level of performance that does not vary greatly in quality over time.

Oxford Dictionary

Based on this definition, it appears two things need to be determined to achieve being consistent. Those two things are:

  • What is the level of performance you need to achieve?
  • How do you maintain that level of performance over time?

In this context, I think of performance as an action you need to do regularly to reach your goal. Let’s go back to the fitness example in the introduction.

If your goal is to get fit, what action do you need to do regularly to achieve that? You need to exercise a certain amount of time in a day, and a certain amount of days in a week.

Once you’ve determined that, then you need to know how to maintain that action over time. There are various different psychological studies on maintaining a habit. Here are a few that may help with maintaining action over time.

Iowa State University did research that found intrinsic rewards helped people to keep their habit of exercise.

Research from the University of Warwick concluded that repeating an action over and over can help make your habit stick.

In a Fast Company article on the best way to actually make a new habit, they found from their research that habit reflection was the best way to maintain one. Habit reflection involves picking a past situation you created a new habit, writing down what you learned about how to do it, and creating a plan to use those lessons to form your new habit.

How consistency has helped me

Consistency has helped me achieve many of the things I wanted in life. In college, I did my best to be as consistent as possible about going to class and taking good notes. I believe that effort helped me with making the dean’s list multiple times and eventually graduating.

One time I had a fitness goal to gain more muscle. I consistently worked out at least three times a week and ate a certain amount most days of the week. Eventually, I gained around 30 pounds and was more muscular than I’d ever been in my life.

It’s been the case in many other areas of my life. When I kept up the work of pursuing a goal I set, I usually was able to accomplish it eventually.

Final tips on being consistent

  • Making a conscious decision to be consistent
  • Revising one’s concept of time
  • Having a plan with an objective
  • Remembering that thoughts and feelings are temporary and subjective
  • Doing one thing at time while being in the present moment.

Feel free to share any tips you’ve learned about maintaining consistency. Being consistent will help you get closer to accomplishing the goals you have for yourself.
